AUZAI, a 21.5 Computer Monitor for my Mac Mini M1
Since I bought a Mac Mini M1, I have been rethinking my whole display setup for my home office. I am already using a 4k display for my main tasks and for my photo work, but having a secondary display on the side to keep on eye on emails, or notes and todos seemed to be a good idea.
I came across this 21.5 inch monitor from the brand AUZAI and it seemed to have it all. Or almost, since it doesn’t have a USB-C connector. That wasn’t a problem for me since the Mac Mini M1 has an HDMI port. Actually, using HDMI was even better since it saved me from using the only other free USB-C port on my desktop computer.
The monitor is all plastic, but it’s light, easy to setup and move around, and it doesn’t feel that cheap. At less than $150, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.
Setting up the whole thing was easy. You plug it in, connect it to your computer, turn it on, and you’re ready to go. All the cables were included in the box and they all seemed to be of decent enough quality. The base doesn’t allow you lots of options in terms of display angles. But I was able to find a satisfying tilt nonetheless. The tilt options you have will be enough in most use cases. If you have complex setup, or if you need to have this monitor in a particular position, I would recommend you a different monitor with more mount options.
I spent a few minutes adjusting the contrasts, brightness and colors to match the main monitor I am using, and within a few minutes, the results were quite close. Again, for $150, that was fairly impressive.
The tint of the display itself was fairly different still and I couldn’t manage to match it exactly to the main monitor I own. The tint is always too blue or too yellow. I opted for the more yellow setting as it is the one that was making my eyes more relaxed.
I also noticed that the color accuracy was depending a lot on the angle I was looking at the screen. This is the main thing that I didn’t like about the monitor. I always had to make sure that I (or my cats) didn’t accidentally moved or slightly tilted the display.
I make a bigger deal of the issue than what it actually was since I wasn’t using this monitor as my main display. Color accuracy didn’t matter that much, most of my graphical and photo work took place on my main monitor, this secondary display was here to help me keep track of my todos, quickly reply to emails, or write down ideas and random notes. I would assume that making any sort of visual work on it would probably result in some color mistakes. Nothing major if you are aware of it and are able to double check your colors.
Other than that, I found that this AUZAI monitor, besides only being full HD (1080p), that the image was quite sharp, even the text. This made the process of writing down notes or reading emails quite comfortable. Resolution isn’t everything and I have worked on monitors in the past that were giving me eye fatigue within an hour or use because the image and especially text would be too pixelated.
This AUZAI monitor is a great display at such a low price. I have wanted to get a secondary display for a while, and this monitor is a no brainer considering its quality and the low price point. I wouldn’t recommend it for a main monitor setup as it is still quite limited in terms of display settings and the lower resolution of 1080p. But I truly enjoyed using it to benefit from a little extra screen real estate and displaying my notes at all times.
