I totally agree that a number of likes does not have a deep meaning. However, marketers and agencies the only metrics they have access to. While I agree that so much value and content can be spread out from stories, marketers and agencies cannot know how much an audience interacts with an account’s stories. Moreover, swiping up to listen to a record or something is such a strong conversion! From all the followers, not all of them will check out the story of an account and even fewer will actually swipe up and consume the external content. That just does not seem sustainable to me for a medium size audience.

The end of the same era is going to change things up for sure! And while it is an excellent thing for the average user, it is entirely forcing influencers, agencies, and marketers to change their practices profoundly.
